From August 2005 to August 2006, I lived in India. This was a year full of challenges, humor, and growth, all documented here.

Get Ready to Get Wet!

My ninth month in India has ended, and, along with it, the unbearable summer of South India. As June approaches, we here are so thankful for the break in temperatures, the cool breeze blowing, and, yes, even the massive amounts of rain.

It is monsoon season, and, although it’s a wet and muddy couple of months, it seems to be everyone’s favorite time of year here in Kerala.

It rains nearly nonstop now. Sometimes it comes down in drizzles, and sometimes it comes down in torrents. Sometimes it falls straight from the sky so that, covered by your black umbrella, you can walk outside without getting too wet. But sometimes the wind blows and the rain comes at you sideways, so that, regardless of the umbrella you are carrying over your head, you will be soaked to the bone by the time you reach the comfort of the indoors.

The monsoon is, of course, wet. But it is also beautiful. The greens of the trees are more dazzling than ever, and, although the world outside is dark and gray, there is a comfort that comes from the could cover. And besides all this, the temperatures are more bearable – so bearable, in fact, that, as I lay my head on my pillow at night, I feel the need to turn off my ceiling fan and fall asleep, instead, to the sound of the rain on the rooftop and the breeze blowing through my window.

The world is wet. And you’ll get wet if you go out into it. But you don’t want to stay locked up inside either. Not only is the power likely to be out, but, even in the rain, there’s a whole world out there to continue to explore and discover. So get ready to get wet!
