From August 2005 to August 2006, I lived in India. This was a year full of challenges, humor, and growth, all documented here.

Varkala

Since I didn’t have an office all week, I really couldn’t do any work. I spent most of my time at Chacko Homes, which, although a lovely place, can get boring after a while. I was thrilled when Becca suggested a little weekend getaway.

We left Friday morning for Varkala – a tourist destination for those whose idea of tourism is along the lines of lying on the beach (suited me just fine!). It is not tourist season, so the usually busy, bustling line of resorts and restaurants that sit on a famed red cliff overlooking the sea were relatively quiet and calm.

Becca and I stayed at a hotel owned by a friend she met at her work site. He gave us a really good rate on the room, but we paid our keep in food and drink over the weekend. Aside from eating and drinking, we spent our time in Varkala wandering the red cliffs, wading in the ocean (it was too rough to really swim), and chatting with the other tourists – a fun couple from England (who let us use the pool at their hotel), a gorgeous woman from Germany (who actually spoke with a very American accent), and a stunningly beautiful man from Spain (who had me wishing we could all just stay in Varkala together forever – or perhaps someday I could move to Spain?).

It was a beautiful weekend. The sun was shining, the scenery was stunning, and the sound of the waves crashing against those red cliffs was oh-so-soothing. With full bellies, renewed energy, and a small amount of regret for the fact that it was all over, we bid goodbye to our new friends early this afternoon. We left the red cliffs with the sea breeze blowing over them behind, and we headed back to reality, otherwise known as Aluva. (Yes, it has its good points, but it will never be Varkala.)
