Rummy
I love games, but I’ve never been too big on card games. I like Go Fish, Uno, and other easy games like that, and once in a while, I’ve even been known to play Euchre; but playing card games has never been my favorite way to pass time. Still, I’ve gotten into a habit of passing two hours, two afternoons a week, with the Rummy Group at Chacko Homes. I don’t even know how to play Rummy, and I can’t say I particularly like it; but I continue to come for Rummy Group because I can’t stand the thought of missing time with some of my favorite old ladies at Chacko Homes.
The group changes from day to day. Sometimes there are only three or four players, and sometimes there are six or more. We play with 21 cards, which I cannot seem to get the hang of holding, and we play for plastic money, which I always seem to lose. Yesterday, in fact, I believe I ended with negative 19 rupees. Thank goodness the money is plastic.
I think I’m getting better as time goes on, but, as time goes on, I’m not just learning to play Rummy in this Rummy Group. I’m also learning patience, as I wait for the right cards to complete my sequences. I’m learning tolerance, as I endure my losing hands over and over again. But, most of all, I’m learning that Rummy, kind of like life, is not about winning or losing; and it’s not even about how I play with the hand that I am dealt. It’s simply about being there to play and enjoying every moment of the game.
