From August 2005 to August 2006, I lived in India. This was a year full of challenges, humor, and growth, all documented here.

The Squatter

Well, I made it nearly a month, but I was never going to avoid it forever - not spending a whole year in India anyway. So I've just had my first experience with the squatter toilet.

See, because I sweat so much here, I have been very good about keeping myself hydrated. I drink eight glasses of water every day - three for breakfast. And so far, in fear of the squatter that is in my office, I have not used the toilet at work. But, when you gotta go, you gotta go; and today, I really had to go.

So I went in the squatter. And you know, it really wasn't that bad. There are porcelain boards on which to place your feet, and the hole in the floor is big enough that you don't necessarily have to have great aim. The most difficult part of the whole process is keeping your clothes out of the way of the...umm...flow. I was able to tuck my top tightly under my chin and out of the way, but I hadn't a clue what to do with my pants. I left them around my ankles and held them out of the way to the best of my ability. They remained dry, by the way.

All in all, it was a success AND an experience. But maybe I'll start having just two glasses of water for breakfast.
